About the Bakers
Edward I. and Fannie L. Baker turned their love for their daughter, Debbie, with Down syndrome into a drive to help others with the condition. The Bakers were pioneers in providing support services for children with Down syndrome and their families. Side by side with a dozen dedicated parents, the Bakers helped to found the Arc of Cuyahoga County, where Ed served as President for several terms. They also were founding trustees of what is now known as New Avenues to Independence. They also formed the Edward I. and Fannie L. International Resources Center for Down Syndrome, which became part of The Arc of GC in the late 1990’s, as a research and service center for families. As a tribute to the Baker’s commitment, generosity and dedication to helping others, The Arc of Greater Cleveland has named this event the Baker Walk Run.
Annual Arc of Greater Cleveland Open
The Arc of Greater Cleveland Open will take place on June 23, 2010 at CopperTop at Cherokee Hills in Valley City. It will be a scramble format with hole sponsorship opportunities. Everyone has a great time. This is one tournament where even if you did not play well, you can still go home feeling fulfilled and thankful that you were able to help individuals and children with disabilities live, learn, work, play and be a part of the community.

After 44 years in the institution, Bill’s life was about to begin…
“A Friend Indeed – The Bill Sackter Story” is an inspiring new documentary showing how a forgotten man and an uncommon friendship shattered the world’s perceptions of people with disabilities. Bill Sackter’s life story was made famous by the award winning made-for-tv movie “Bill” (1981) starring Mickey Rooney as Bill, and Dennis Quaid as the young filmmaker Barry Morrow who had befriended Bill in 1972 and began filming their relationship and adventures. Now get to know the real people behind the story in this engaging documentary featuring actual film and video footage and photographs of Bill Sackter himself, along with new interviews with the people closest to Bill, in an uplifting true story that has been over 35 years in the making! With a harmonica, a warm cup of coffee and a positive embrace of life, get to know the real Bill Sackter, an international hero for people with disabilities, and witness how a little friendship and attention transformed Bill’s life and everyone around him.

Including Samuel
Photojournalist Dan Habib rarely thought about inclusion before he had his son Samuel seven years ago. Now he thinks about inclusion every day. Habib’s documentary film, Including Samuel examines the educational and social inclusion of youth with disabilities as a civil rights issue. The film is built on the efforts of Habib and his family to include Samuel, 8 in all facets of school and community. Including Samuel also features four other families with varied inclusion experiences, plus interviews with dozens of teachers, young people, parents and disability rights experts. The film recently won the annual Positive Images in Media award from TASH, an international group committed to the full inclusion of people with disabilities. The film was also named “Best Documentary” of the 2007 Somewhat North of Boston Film Festival, and has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and in the Washington Post and Boston Globe.
A select few local screenings of the film with facilitated discussions led by Dan Habib were hosted by The Arc of Greater Cleveland on April 14, 2008.
